Description:           The School Bus Driver transports children to and from school, field trips, athletic events, etc. in a safe and efficient manner.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Airbrake and Passenger Endorsement
  • State School Bus Driver’s Certification
  • Minimum age requirement of 21 years
  • Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Must secure CPR and First Aid Certificate within 30 days of hire
  • Must be able to successfully pass drug tests as determined by Arizona Department of Transportation
  • Knowledge of state and local laws, regulations and policies regarding school bus operations and transporting children including the transportation of Special Education students
  • Ability to maintain student discipline and safely transport all students
  • Must be able to safely and correctly drive a routine school bus route while adhering to time constraint
  • Knowledge of the English language including reading, writing and oral communication
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working/dealing with students, parents and staff
  • Must have strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to comprehend and perform functions from written and verbal instructions
  • Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, and lift and/or move at least 75-100 pounds
  • Must be available for extra duty assignments such as field and activity trips as required
  • Must be an energetic, highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health
  • Prior school bus driving experience is desired
  • Bilingual is desired

 

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Obey all traffic laws and observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
  • Assist students as they enter and exit the bus
  • Assure seat belts and/or safety restraints for wheelchairs are properly in place
  • Maintain discipline and supervision while transporting only authorized students
  • report undisciplined students to the proper authority
  • discharge students only at authorized stops
  • Keep assigned bus clean and in proper working and safety condition
  • Inspect the bus before each operation for mechanical defects, notifying the proper authority of any mechanical failure
  • Inform students about safety requirements
  • Supervise bus assistant to ensure highest safety standards
  • Exercise responsible leadership during school trips
  • Load and unload food lunch equipment
  • Conduct emergency bus evacuation drills with students at individual schools
  • Perform vehicle pre- and post- trip inspections, fueling and minor vehicle maintenance to assure student/public safety and to protect District assets
  • Drive school bus on assigned daily routes and on field trips
  • Report unruly student activities, loitering and vandalism, safety, sanitary and fire hazards to the Transportation Director
  • Clean, wash and fuel District buses, vehicles and other equipment
  • File school bus citations for stop-arm violations with Department of Public Safety
  • Perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Maintain mileage records and daily logs
  • Review assigned bus routes; notifies office of inconsistencies or needed changes
  • Inform mechanic(s) of needed repairs and files proper work orders
  • Transport students on field trips as assigned
  • Document and report discipline problems and write bus conduct reports
  • Document and maintain records of problems or unusual situations and inform transportation director when necessary
  • Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/inservices, attend on-going training classes as directed, and read professional publications for continued professional development
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel and student and family records and/or information
  • Support and follow the rules, regulations and policies set by the School Board and the District
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board, the Director of Transportation or his/her designee

 

Length of Employment

 

  • Nine (9) months
  • School calendar will determine the days worked during the school year.

Evaluation:             Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy GDO
