Description: The Bus Monitor supervises the safety of special needs students to and from school, field trips, athletic events, etc.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- Must secure CPR and First Aid Certificate within 30 days of hire
- Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Ability to cope with both mentally and physically handicapped children
- Knowledge of and ability to restrain students when necessary
- Ability to maintain student discipline and safety on the bus
- Knowledge of District and State policy regarding special needs students and bus transportation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working/dealing with students, parents and staff
- Must have strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to comprehend and perform functions from written and verbal instructions
- Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, and lift and/or move at least 75-100 pounds
- Must be able to lift/move students safely if necessary
- Must be an energetic, highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health
- Ability to communicate with students and parents in English and Spanish is preferred
- Prior work experience is preferred
Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist students as they enter and exit the bus
- Operate the lift for students in wheelchairs
- Position and hook up wheelchairs ensuring that seat belts and/or safety restraints are properly in place
- Supervise students while in transit
- Escort student(s) to classroom when necessary
- Document and report any unusual situation and/or discipline problems and write bus conduct reports
- Observe students regarding any health situations that may occur on the bus (i.e. seizures, choking, etc.)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with students, parents and staff(s)
- Stay current regarding any physical or medical changes pertaining to students in transit and report changes to bus driver
- Assist in keeping the bus neat and clean including assisting with emergency bus cleaning
- Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/inservices, attend on-going training classes as directed, and read professional publications for continued professional development
- Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel and student and family records and/or information
- Support and follow the rules, regulations and policies set by the School Board and the District
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board, the Director of Transportation or his/her designee
Length of Employment:
- Nine (9) months
- School calendar will determine the days worked during the school year.
