Job Title: HEAD CUSTODIAN

Description: The Head Custodian participates in and supervises school custodial services necessary to provide a safe, effective, and attractive environment for students, staff, and the district’s educational programs.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Experience as a school custodian or equivalent position in other institutions or industry
- Knowledgeable in basic techniques of carpentry, minor electrical and plumbing repairs, and grounds maintenance
- Knowledge of the English language including reading, writing and oral communication
- Ability to delegate work and direct custodians to complete assigned work
- Physical condition necessary to bend, stoop, stand, and lift up to 50 pound
- Ability to do manual work in cleaning and providing maintenance of buildings and grounds
- Willing to participate in on-going training
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working/dealing with others
- Has the ability to work without immediate supervision
- Should be able to lift and/or move at least 75 pounds
- Knowledgeable in basic carpentry, minor electrical and plumbing repairs, and grounds maintenance
- Must be knowledgeable of the operation of fire and security systems and to assist with regular fire drills
- Must work constantly to promote safety, health, and comfort for the students, staff members, and personnel using the school plant
- Must be an energetic, highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health
- Bilingual is desired
Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Organize, schedule, participate in and supervise the custodial services at a district facility
- Make regular inspections of the buildings and grounds and make or request repairs necessary to provide a safe environment
- Check school building for safety hazards and major repairs and report information to the building administrator
- Schedule duties and train employees to perform custodial duties
- Maintain work schedules for all custodians and areas of cleaning responsibilities
- Ensure that the custodial staff meets the districts standard for cleaning and to see that all performance responsibilities are met
- Assist the principal and the facilities director in the selection of new custodial personnel
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of custodial staff members as directed by administration
- Requisition supplies and materials necessary for provision of efficient custodial services Maintain proper sanitation and security of the buildings
- Schedule routine cleaning of walls, floors, fixtures, windows, sidewalks, etc. on a regular basis
- Replace light bulbs, do touch-up painting, and perform preventative maintenance tasks
- Maintain security of buildings and grounds
- Keep building and premises including classrooms, restrooms, sidewalks, driveways, play areas neat, clean and free from rubbish and weeds at all times
- Sweep/Vacuum class rooms, dust furniture and clean sinks in classrooms
- Clean corridors after school each day and during the day when necessary
- Scrub, wet mop bathroom floors and disinfect toilets daily
- Clean all drinking fountains and sanitary fixtures daily
- Monitor and clean all restrooms and drinking fountains on a scheduled basis throughout the day
- Wash all windows inside and outside twice each year (more frequently if necessary)
- Conduct an on-going program of general maintenance and repairs of facilities
- Remain on school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use of building has been authorized by administration
- Open gates and doors at the beginning of each school day
- Check all doors and hardware to ensure they are properly working
- Secure all doors and windows before leaving each day
- Move furniture, desks, or equipment within building as required for various activities
- Set up chairs, tables and other furniture/ equipment as requested
- Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste
- Evaluate needs and repairs at the end of each school year and make recommendations to the building administrator
- Make repairs, upgrades and referrals necessary to ensure a safe, clean and attractive facility for students and faculty for the up-coming school year
- Maintain inventory on equipment, tools machines and custodial supplies
- Participate in the cleaning and maintenance of the school, grounds and equipment
- Submit requisitions for custodial supplies and equipment through the principal to the Director of Transportation and Maintenance
- Assist with regular fire drills
- Assume responsibility for the general fire safety of all buildings
- Check fire extinguisher monthly and initial card if working properly and serviced
- Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/inservices, attend on-going training classes as directed, and read professional publications for continued professional development
- Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel and student and family records and/or information
- Support and follow the rules, regulations and policies set by the School Board, the assigned school and the District
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board, the Principal and/or the Director of Facilities
